Question Yourself before Chosing USMLE !

.

Hi Friends I wanted to post a blog on how USMLE can be
The questions you must ask to urself before coming to US or taking USMLE.....

First let me clarify that USMLE is a longer process than expected. It takes years to get into the system. Its money consuming and it tests ur patience.you will be facing lot of hurdles and there will be moments of despair and loneliness and deserted feeling.i am not scaring u its the truth. The competition is that severe. The people coming here are not just the graduates of foreign med school. Some people are even taking MPH or certain other courses just for the sake of getting residency. There is no genuine reason behind doing MPH(Master's in Public Health) 'cuz they r not gonna continue it as their career anyway. But being in US with legal status to work, some of them are doing research and even having publications. Also for being here, they r learning the culture of this country which helps them get absorbed in to this system quickly. So,that shows the level of competition.I don't suggest u do F1 courses. But they have some edge over ordinary IMG's.Of course u can work as a volunteer in any research with your Non-Immigrant visa too (Like B1/B2) but the chances r slim.
The questions U shud ask to urself are :

  1. Are you academecially bright or hard woker to get good score?'cuz score bring you interviews and ur communication skills help u get selected in the interview
  2. Are you financially sound?-Its gonna cost you a ton - Can be upto a maximum of $25000
  3. Do u have relatives here in US? They will help u for food shelter and may get you some observership or even recommendation?!
  4. Are you patient enough? - It takes years as I said atlest 1-2 years and as you know its a once an yearly process and the interview process it self takes 6months
  5. Do you have moral support? As I said some times u get lost in this alien country....so u need good friend it can be your spouce or some one who can give u very good advices..
  6. Do you have good communication skills?- I mean if you r shy U cannot go anywhere / do any thing in this country.Apart from that getting into residency requires this vital skill...thats what make you get selected for the interview...
Hope This Helps....!

One of reader asked me the following:
Is it better to write usmle here in india or come to us on some hospital administration or public health and complete my steps there in US?
Hi...
Toooooooo many Questions ! I understand your confusion.
Its already written in so many blogs regarding USMLE I myself proposed a calender which you can read on my Blog drbpavan.blogspot.com how to manage yopur time to get into residency
There is no diff whether u take MLE here r thr but its mandatory to take MLE step 2 CS(Clinical Skills) and Step 3 in US
Where you can study well ?Its upto you to think abt how the things work being in ur place or in US at ur brothers house.
and getting scores in high 90's is a crucial one to sustain in this competetion its a must

I feel F1 visa students get good reputation irrespective of their branch. But Hospital ad is good cuz its one of the growing branches,...and most ppl do MPH.Having publications & research in US is a big asset.
Getting F1 visa also lil difficult compared to B1/B2 and its costly affair to do any F1(MPG/HA) here...it costs u anywhere from 10lakhs rupees($25000) minimum unless u get funding(don ask me abt funding ;-))
but u shud have strong dedication cuz once u join F1 u may get deviated but i remind u ppl got 99/99's while doing F1 so its not an obstacle. There wont be every day classes so u will have time!
Hope this helps!

Yeah.. It's surely longer than you expect.. And it's also a lot costlier than you would expect.. It got me bankrupt two time over before I got into IM!!

what if i have got a score in 80s in step 1? should i still pursue mle or leave it and concentrate on indian pg?

Not necessarily you have tobe discouraged.i have seen people getting into residency by doing research etc., also you still have 2 more chances ( ie., Step 2 and 3)if you improve in scores you can still have chance.but remember getting into family practice,or pediatrics will be easier than getting into IM with that score.

I'm doing my mbbs in India and I wish to take up a surgical field after i'm done. What are the chances of an international medical graduate getting into general surgery/ophthalmology in the states? I'm not a green card holder.

Hi Pavan,

I am a Software Engg in UK, in good position.

My brother completed MBBS 6 months back. Initially he started think about USMLE due to some guidance from seniors he frightened to go for USML. But personally he is very much interested to go USA do residency.

He can also get PG in very good university in India he has that confidence.

He has confidence that he can get good scores in steps as well. no financial issues. only thing we are worrying is it right decision or not as its time constraint. we have friends there but not in medical field.

my question is, who has good knowledge and hard working nature can get into it easily without any other background? he started just now so he may eligible for SEP 2014.. unfortunately if he miss that may eligible for 2015 admissions.

please give your suggestion on this.

Thanks.

Hello Doctor,
I have completed MD anaesthesiology from mumbai and have one year experience after that. My husband got post doctorate position in US and so we will be moving there for 2-3 years. I would like to work or do some fellowship there. What are the chances of getting that without MLE? Are the efforts for MLE worth if our stay in US is for 2-3 years?
What will you suggest?

I hv been trying to knw this since a long time but nobody has given me a gud answer. Some say u won't b recognised here since Indian gov't sector doesn't recognise usmle..some say u will hv grt scope in private sector just after residency in US n starting salary will b like 1 lakh rs
